Interesting move by the Times, but I can’t help thinking that they will be undone by the fact that there is similar high quality centre right journalism available for free elsewhere. I heard James Harding on the radio too and was struck by his apparent belief that the Times offers something so much better than all other news sources (I guess he has to say this though!) . Personally, I don’t think The Times is distinct enough (it’s not an ID badge paper like the Gruan or Daily Telegraph), or so much better than other new sites that most folk won’t go elsewhere. The advent of the freesheet Metro provides a useful example. Where Metro has appeared, many other papers have had to follow and give themselves away free. Given that such a high proportion of printed newspaper content is from syndicated sources why would you pay to read the same stories, from the same sources, when you can read them for free?
